The Great Wall Of China The Great Wall of China needs no introduction.  It is the only man made creation on earth that can be seen from outer space.  As the 20th Century drew to a close, Walt Brown visited the Great Wall to put it into historical perspective; with a changing China, the impending re-claiming of Hong Kong, and the attempts to spread China as a tourist destination for the West. The Great Wall extends over 4000 miles in length; though much of it has deteriorated due to age and lack of upkeep.  There are two main tourist sections of the wall; each within a few hours drive of Beijing, making for nice, day-long, tourist outings.  The Great Wall is over 2000 years old; formed when Emperor Qin, the first emperor of a united China (who is buried among the Terra Cotta Army,) had his workers join together several smaller walls in adjacent "regions" that all had been built to keep the Huns from invading from the North.  As has been pointed out, it is an irony that what once was built to repel "outsiders" now is a major attraction to bring "outsiders" in.
