Description
This piece was part of a series on ethnic and racial identity. The question I posed as part of my series is am I defined by the way I see myself or by the way the world sees me? In making this series I worked with each of the model to find images that related to their ethnic or racial identity that they emotionally responded to. These are images that invoke, hurt, suffering, nostalgia, personal empowerment, and anger. My intention was to make the images appear as birthmarks or tattoos on the face. The frames are designed by myself and use wood relating to the identity on the face, then they were hand carved by myself and local master craftsmen James Duncan. This particular photograph references African American identity, and uses photos and illustrations both contemporary and historical.
