Strauss (1980) , “The myster of this event is emphasized by the fringe of clouds impinging on the somber terrestrial scene below and by the scale of tonal values: the bright heavenly assembly is placed on a gray middle tone, whereas the events on earth are pictured against a black background, the ultimate effect attainable in this medium” (p. 426) .
